A federal immigration agent shot and injured a man in north Minneapolis on Wednesday evening, marking the second such federal-involved shooting in the city in just over a week and intensifying already high tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the area.
According to city officials and federal statements, the incident occurred during an enforcement action when agents attempted to stop an individual in the 600 block of 24th Avenue North. The man reportedly fled in a vehicle and then on foot, leading to a physical confrontation with the federal officer. During the struggle, the agent fired a shot that struck the man in the leg. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Department of Homeland Security said the situation unfolded after the suspect attempted to evade arrest and resisted, during which other people allegedly attacked the agent with makeshift weapons — including a shovel and a broomstick — before the defensive shot was fired.
