Federal ICE Agent Shoots Man in North Minneapolis Amid Tensions Following Renee Good Killing, Sparking Protests and Police Response

A federal immigration agent shot and injured a man in north Minneapolis on Wednesday evening, marking the second such federal-involved shooting in the city in just over a week and intensifying already high tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the area.

According to city officials and federal statements, the incident occurred during an enforcement action when agents attempted to stop an individual in the 600 block of 24th Avenue North. The man reportedly fled in a vehicle and then on foot, leading to a physical confrontation with the federal officer. During the struggle, the agent fired a shot that struck the man in the leg. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Department of Homeland Security said the situation unfolded after the suspect attempted to evade arrest and resisted, during which other people allegedly attacked the agent with makeshift weapons โ€” including a shovel and a broomstick โ€” before the defensive shot was fired.

The shooting triggered a crowd of protesters, with demonstrators gathering and clashing with law enforcement. Federal agents reportedly deployed tear gas and crowd-control tactics as tensions flared. Local leaders and residents have expressed alarm over federal actions in Minneapolis, especially coming so soon after the fatal ICE shooting of 37-year-old Renee Macklin Good earlier in the month, which also sparked national controversy and widespread protests.

City officials, including Minneapolis leadership, have called for calm while condemning escalating violence and urging cooperation to de-escalate the situation. The Department of Homeland Security continues to defend the actions of its agents, asserting that the shooting was justified under the circumstances.

The incident remains under investigation as community leaders, activists, and lawmakers weigh in on the broader implications for immigration enforcement operations and public safety in Minneapolis.
